diabetes test should be carried out on the whole family irrespectively of the age. And the need for proper nutrition should be preached
The outreach/awareness took place at cherubim junction, Wetheral road Owerri, Imo State at around 8:20 am. The purpose of the outreach was to enlighten the general public on the need to carry out regular blood sugar test and healthy living as the theme of day encapsulates the family. It is important to note that diabetes test should be carried out on the whole family irrespectively of the age. And the need for proper nutrition should be preached. Research has shown that even a child could also be a victim of diabetes. These are facts unknown to over 80% of the world population.
After the test, people with high sugar level were advised on how to manage their health by adhering to their regular checkup (treatment) and proper nutrition, to avoid the sugar level reaching to its critical stage which can lead to coma. Having it in mind that diabetes is a genetic disorder which cannot be cured but it can be managed.
Life transformation for Africa medical team headed by Mr Francis Chukwuebuka Ihenetu and Miss Ugoeze C. Ihezue also assisted by Mr Chimezie Ezeani (ED) for logistics and mobilization carried out the blood sugar test using one of the most accurate glucometers. Our target was to attend to 50 people but we were able to attend to 43 people (23 female and 20 male within the age bracket 22-60 years.
At the end of the exercise, two people were identified with high sugar level with some mild cases. Those with high level were advised on the measures they would take to reduce and manage their sugar level and further referral and feedback.
